Traditional roots, innovative vision.
The Paride D’Angelo estate sits in Pianella, between the Majella, the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic. It is a rare and lovely spot, facing fully south, in sun from dawn to dusk. Wine here is a valuable inheritance, one we chose to preserve and build on with modern, forward-thinking methods.
We combine the knowledge and experience of the past with the newest technology and practice in the field, to make wine that is authentic and current, that meets what people want to drink, and that respects health and the environment.
organic. a choice driven by deep values.
For us organic is a deep commitment and a way of life built on solid values, a firm belief in sustainability and in protecting health and the environment.
On the estate we use only copper and sulphur against downy and powdery mildew, in limited amounts. We pick low-dose copper at 5% to 7% when the weather is dry and humidity is low, and copper at 23% during rain and high humidity. Above all we watch the estate with weather towers so we can time the treatments more carefully.
To keep those treatments working and to give each bunch air and sun, we work mostly by hand, going into the vineyard four times over the summer to green prune. We do not till the soil, using only a flail mower so the capillaries in the ground stay intact. We fertilise organically, with green manure from legumes rich in potassium, phosphorus and magnesium, and with selected natural manure from northern Italian barns, high in nitrogen.
A matter of passion
Work well in the field, bring the fruit to a high enough quality that the wine needs no correcting in the cellar. Yeasts selected straight from the skins and from my own canes. In the cellar the wines rest in steel only, and in concrete for the Montepulciano. High acidity, so they mature and age well over time. This is my philosophy and this is my passion.
Our passion started when we were small. Our father was the Abruzzo reviewer for the Guida Duemilavini, and every May the sample bottles from all the Abruzzo wineries arrived at the house for him to taste and write up. We could not wait to get back from school and sit next to him. We enjoyed tasting along and handing out our first verdicts.
